Though the nominees are chosen solely by members of the sound branch, the winners in all categories are decided by an academy-wide vote, which means that every year you’ve got writers, actors, costume designers, film editors and more professionals in other fields weighing in on what makes great sound, so the most action-packed or most musical movies tend to win. Hugo‘s competition in the Best Sound Editing category consisted of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, and Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. (Only one other film, Whiplash, has won the Oscar here. And that 1917 wasn’t even nominated for that award makes Ford v Ferrari a relatively safe bet here. That may be in large part because most of the people voting for the winners aren’t sound experts.
